US DOE unveils funding for marine energy development

A Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for the advancement of marine and hydrokinetic technology was announced by the U.S. Department of Energy today. The FOA, entitled "Marine and Hydrokinetic Technology Readiness Advancement Initiative," will solicit applications for projects to advance the development of technologies that generate renewable electricity from waves, currents, tides, free-flowing rivers, and the ocean's thermal energy. Technologies at various levels of development will be evaluated based on metrics and guidelines established by DOE, and funding will be competitively awarded to a variety of projects. Siemens invests in tidal energy

Siemens, has invested in Marine Current Turbines Ltd, it was announced today (25th February). This latest investment in MCT brings the total investment in company, over the past two months, to £8.5million.

Lord Hunt, Minister of State for the UK Department of Energy and Climate Change welcomed the new £4.8million funding round saying "Our seas are a fantastic asset that can generate clean, green and home-grown power that will boost our transition to a low carbon economy. I’m pleased that more investors are coming forward to back Marine Current Turbines as they seek to harness the UK’s excellent tidal resources."

MCT raises £3.5m for commercial tidal farm

Marine Current Turbines (MCT) has raised £3.5m, it was announced today (21st December) to help fund its plans to deploy the UK's first commercial tidal energy farm in UK waters within the next two years. The money, says MCT, came from a group led by Carbon Trust Investments Limited and including Bank Invest, EDF Energy, High Tide and a group of significant private investors.

Shetland’s first wave power project launched

A joint-venture to develop the first wave power project off the Shetland Islands has been launched by Pelamis Wave Power and Vattenfal it was announced this week (16th December). The launch of the joint-venture, called Aegir, coincided with the opening of Vattenfall’s new office in Edinburgh.

Aegir, explained Pelamis in a statement, has been set up to explore wave power development opportunities in Scottish waters and plans to deploy Pelamis Wave Power’s second generation ‘P-2’ wave energy convertor on the developed site.
