Bidding for Pentland Firth's Inner Sound reopened
Wednesday, 31 March 2010 18:00

Expressions of interest for a tidal energy project in the Inner Sound, which lies between Caithness on the Scottish mainland and the island of Stroma, were invited today (31st March) by the UK's Crown Estate. The Inner Sound has potential for a significant commercial tidal energy project, and could increase the potential capacity in the Pentland Firth and Orkney waters to more than 1,200 MW.

The announcement was welcomed by Highlands and Islands Enterprise. Audrey MacIver, joint head of energy at Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) said: "We are delighted at the speed with which The Crown Estate has re-opened the tendering process for the Inner Sound. These waters have great potential for energy generation and we look forward to working with the successful bidder to support their success and to maximise the economic benefit their development will bring to the region."

UK government launches marine energy action plan
Monday, 15 March 2010 18:37

Marine energy has the potential to provide the UK with substantial amounts of clean energy and a significant number of new jobs according to the UK government's Marine Energy Action Plan, launched today (15th March) by Lord Hunt of Kings Heath, Minister of State for Energy. Speaking on a visit to the home of the 1.2MW SeaGen turbine in Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland, Lord Hunt said; "Harnessing the power of our seas will help us reduce our carbon emissions, provide clean, green, secure and reliable energy, create jobs and provide export opportunities.

"This Action Plan sets out our vision for what marine energy can do for the UK and what we need to do to make it happen. I look forward to working with industry and other partners to get the most out of our waters and build a new, world-leading energy generation sector in the UK."
