JP Kenny has been appointed as engineering and management contractor for the Wave Hub project, currently being developed in the south west of the UK by the South West Regional Development Agency (RDA). The announcement, made today (17th November) brought to a close the tender process which saw 11 companies express an interest in the work with three being shortlisted. |

The UK's Crown Estate today (17th November) invited initial proposals from developers for the UK’s first commercial marine power sites, located in the Pentland Firth and surrounding waters. The Round 1 leasing programme, it says, is aimed at delivering 700 MW of new offshore wave and tidal power by 2020 and is expected to bring significant economic benefits to north Scotland.

A PowerBuoy wave power generation unit was deployed in Hawaii this week (12th Novermber) as part of Ocean Power Technologies ongoing programme with the US Navy. The PowerBuoy was launched off Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay, approximately one mile off the coast, in 100 feet of water, and will be connected to the Oahu power grid.

A survey, funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), has been launched to draw together current data relevant to marine energy developments in the Pentland Firth. By collating the information HIE says it will be able to help identify gaps that exist in the current data, and underpin future survey work needed to support the industry's development. The final report will be made available to prospective developers of marine energy in the region.

An Ocean Energy Task Force has been established in the state of Maine to look at strategies for ocean-based wind energy, tidal and wave energy as well as updating information regarding offshore oil and gas resources and technology. The task force was set up by the state's Governor, John E. Baldacci, and will report interim findings to him by 1st April next year. |

A $3 million contract covering its participation in phase two of the US Navy's Deep Water Active Detection Systems (DWADS) program has been won by Ocean Power Technologies it was announced today (5th November). The new contract provides for ocean testing, by the Navy, of an advanced version of the company's autonomous PowerBuoy for the Navy’s operational requirements. In addition, OPT will support the Navy’s ocean test procedures in the areas of mooring design, at-sea operations and deployment.

A 25 year concession to build wave power plants with a total capacity of 100MW for an undisclosed country in Africa has been announced by SDE Energy Ltd. The cost of this project is, says SDE, US $100 million dollars and the expected revenues from the electricity sold are estimated to be approximately US $1 billion dollars. |

Energy analysts at Frost & Sullivan have released an upbeat forecast for ocean energy over the next decade or so. In a statement released today (10th November) the company said that estimates suggest that if ocean energy technologies continue to be supported, and achieve their predicted potential, approximately 3 gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity could be available in the EU by 2020. |

The successful completion of a £5m funding round has been announced on Tuesday (4th November) by Pelamis Wave Power Limited. The fundraising was supported by a number of existing shareholders including Emerald Technology Ventures, Statoilhydro Venture, BlackRock, Atmos and SPG Sustainable Performance Group. The fundraising also included a £2m investment from Scottish Enterprise's Scottish Venture Fund (SVF) a co-investment fund where Scottish Enterprise invests alongside private sector partners in innovative Scottish companies.

A five year agreement to collaborate on research and development of wave and tidal current energy as well as electricity network integration, was signed by the University of Edinburgh and EDF Group on Thursday (30th October). The agreement, says the University, formalises and builds on existing collaboration between EDF Group R&D and the university, who are presently working together in the SuperGen Marine Energy Research Consortium and the EU EquiMar project. SuperGen is a five-university collaboration in underpinning marine energy R&D and EquiMar is a three year European venture to test, evaluate and establish standards for wave and tidal energy technologies.
