Spanish company Iberdrola Renovables has started launching (18th September)the first buoy of a pilot wave power plant at Santoña, Spain, which, says the company, will become the first of its type to be installed in Europe. The budget of the first phase, which includes the electrical marine infrastructure, amounts to some €3 million.
Iberdrola Renovables plans to include 10 buoys with beacons in the plant, which is located four kilometres from the coast at Santoña. The other nine buoys, which will be launched in a later phase, will have an initial installed power of 150 kW. When the 10 buoys are operational, the annual electricity production of this installation will be approximately equivalent to the domestic consumption of some 2,500 homes.
The project has benefited from the 'Programa de Fomento de la Investigación Técnica' (PROFIT) of the Spanish Ministry for Industry, Tourism and Trade, aimed at encouraging companies to carry out technological research and development activities.
