The third annual ocean energy conference, Ocean Wave Renewable Energy Conference, is set to open in Coos Bay, Oregon in just over two weeks time (25th - 26th September). The Oregon coast, say the organizers, is one of the most promising sites for the generation of wave energy in all of North America. The combination of high-energy waves, an established industry base, high demand for new renewable energy across the Western US and a culture of established interest in green innovation and environmental issues make the state a likely spot for the development of wave energy. Governor Ted Kulongoski has made the development of the wave energy a priority and the Oregon Innovation Council designated $4.2 million to support the development of this emerging industry. Oregon's return on investment will result in new, high wage jobs and clean energy. Part of that funding established the Oregon Wave Energy Trust, a private, not-for-profit organization that is an integral part of the state's overall effort to be the leading authority of renewable wave energy. Some experts have estimated that wave energy could eventually supply ten percent of the nation's energy needs. OWET's goal is to have wave energy producing at least 500 megawatts of energy by 2025 for Oregon consumption. Utilizing today's technology, 500 MW would encompass less than five square miles of ocean space. "The Ocean Wave Renewable Energy Conference is a chance for all stakeholders and community members to have a say in how we develop this new, responsible wave energy industry," said Stephanie Thornton, Executive Director of the Oregon Wave Energy Trust. "Since we were formed, the Oregon Wave Energy Trust has been working to bring together Oregon's diverse communities of interest around the oceans and the coastline. This conference is an opportunity to broaden discussions, increase involvement and inform future activities directed by the Wave Energy Trust." Thornton said the conference's speakers and breakout sessions will demystify wave energy technology and discuss issues relevant to various communities of interest. Information about the benefits of wave energy—including the creation of jobs and increased economic development—will also be on the agenda. Guest speakers at the conference include representatives from coastal communities, industry, environmental and state and federal governments.
