Oregon Iron Works to build PowerBuoy for Reedsport

The contract to build first commercial wave energy PowerBuoy® system in North America has been awarded to Oregon Iron Works it was revealed today (4th December) in a statement from Ocean Power Technologies. Construction of this first PowerBuoy system, says the comany, represents Phase One of an expected 10-PowerBuoy Reedsport wave power station which will generate approximately 1.5 megawatts of electricity. The nine additional PowerBuoys will be constructed and installed under Phase Two of the project.

Engineers start Wave Hub drilling operation

Work on the UK's Wave Hub marine energy project began in earnest this week (November 30) with engineers starting to drill through sand dunes at Hayle in Cornwall. When it is complete Wave Hub will be the world's largest test site for wave energy technology. The £42 million project has been developed by the South West RDA (Regional Development Agency) and is a cornerstone of its strategy to develop a world class marine energy industry in South West England.

Atlantis commits to commercial deployment at EMEC

The Atlantis Resources Corporation has signed up for a commercial scale deployment of its AK-1000™ tidal turbine at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney. Deployment of the AK-1000 turbine is scheduled for summer 2010 and Atlantis has also committed to build a comprehensive local supply chain, with manufacturing, installation, operations and maintenance being conducted in the UK.  The company will award three major contracts associated with the deployment, supporting over 100 UK jobs.

Pulse Tidal awarded €8m EU grant for tidal energy system

An €8 million grant, from the EU's technology research and development fund, will allow the Sheffield based company, Pulse Tidal, to begin work immediately on developing its first fully commercial tidal energy generator. The EU grant has been awarded to the team of Pulse and its seven supply chain partners to fund 50% of the development of Pulse's full-scale commercial generator. The remaining 50% will be provided by private investment. According to Pulse Tidal the 1MW generator, which the company currently has no location for, will be commissioned in 2012 and will provide electricity for up to 1,000 homes.
