Elecnor dips toe in wave energy market

Spanish energy company Elecnor SA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Australian ocean energy company, BioPower Systems, last week (29th October) to explore the development of wave energy projects in its core business regions; Spain, Portugal and South America. In announcing the deal Elecnor's Director of Business Development, Mr. A. Javier Esquivias, said that the company has developed a large international portfolio of wind and solar energy projects, and the extension into marine energy is a logical next step. "Wave energy is now emerging as a new clean energy source and we recognise many advantages if the right technology is used.

£8m project to develop wave & tidal energy software

The Energy Technologies Institute has approved an £8 million project that will produce tools capable of accurately estimating the energy yield of major wave and tidal stream energy it was announced on Friday (30th  October). Performance Assessment of Wave and Tidal Array Systems (PerAWaT), a project led by Garrad Hassan, and including EDF Energy, EON, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Oxford, Queen's University Belfast and the University of Manchester will, says the ETI, develop a series of models to predict the performance of wave and tidal stream generator arrays.

£1.2m wave tank testing facility for UK South West

A £1.2 million investment in a new wave tank testing facility for the South West of the UK has been unveiled today (29th October) by the South West Regional Development Agency. The investment is part of the Agency's three-year £7.3 million investment in the Peninsula Research Institute for Marine Renewable Energy (PRIMaRE), and will be located at the University of Plymouth. The main wave tank at the facility will measure 35 metres by 15 metres and be 2 metres deep. It is expected to be completed in early 2012.

City of San Francisco looks at wave energy

A collaborative agreement between the City of San Francisco and Australian BioPower Systems to investigate the generation of wave energy from the Pacific Ocean was announced today (22nd October). Under the agreement, BioPower will work with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) to assess the feasibility of a project located eight kilometres (five miles) off San Francisco's western beaches with a generating capacity of between 10MW and 100MW. The proposed Oceanside Wave Energy Project would consider installation of a wave farm using BioPower's modular wave energy system, bioWAVET.
