Irish/Swedish joint venture wave project unveilled

A joint venture, to develop a commercial scale wave energy project, between Swedish electricity utility Vattenfall and Irish hydrokinetic devloper, Tonn Energy, was unveilled today by the Irish Energy Minister Eamon Ryan TD. In announcing the project the minister confirmed that the Irish government would be supporting it, with grant aid,  through its Investment and Development Agency.

Wave energy deal signed by OPT and Lockheed Martin

A commercial engineering services agreement, to develop wave energy systems for use in future utility-scale power generation projects, has been signed by Ocean Power Technologies and Lockheed Martin it was announced yesterday (13th October). Under the agreement, Lockheed Martin will provide its expertise in systems integration, lean manufacturing, and test and optimization analysis to enhance OPT's PowerBuoy® wave power generation technology to utility-scale.

Huge potential in US hydropower says report

The US hydropower industry has the ability to create up to 700,000 new jobs by 2025 according to a new study, 'Job creation opportunities in hydropower', conducted by Navigant Consulting on behalf of the US National Hydropower Association. The report also suggests that the development of hydropower, pumped storage, and ocean, tidal, and in-stream hydrokinetic technologies can potentially add 60,000MW of renewable energy to the national grid in the same time period.

Wave power station deal for Japan signed by OPT

A deal, which could see Ocean Power Technologies develop a demonstration wave power station in Japan, was signed with a consortium of three leading Japanese companies it was announced yesterday (8th October). The contract will also see OPT becoming a member of the Tokyo Wave Power Initiative, a committee including the city of Tokyo, regional governments and national agencies involved in the promotion of new energy sources.

The Japanese consortium that signed the deal comprises Idemitsu Kosan Co., Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., and Japan Wind Development Co.
