Mersey tidal energy feasibility study launched

A comprehensive feasibility study, to look at the development of a tidal energy project in the River Mersey, has been launched by Peel Energy and the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA). In a statement, late last month, Peel Energy said that the River Mersey has the potential to make a significant contribution to the Government's target to secure 15% of UK energy from renewable sources by 2020.

EU signs contract for wave energy tests

A contract, worth in the region of $4.4M (3 million euros), has been signed by Finnish company AW-Energy and the European Union to put in place a demonstration version of the company's wave energy technology, WaveRoller. The goal of the project is to manufacture and deploy the first grid-connected WaveRoller unit in  Portuguese waters near the town of Peniche. The nominal capacity of the WaveRoller unit is 300 kW and the project includes a one-year testing period.

Bay of Fundy tidal turbine unveiled

A 1-megawatt (MW) tidal turbine, which will be deployed in the Bay of Fundy this fall, was unveiled this week. The turbine forms part of Nova Scotia's tidal power test facility which is being developed by Nova Scotia Power and its technology partner OpenHydro. The Open-Centre Turbine was manufactured in Ireland by OpenHydro, and it will rest directly on the ocean floor using a subsea gravity base fabricated in Dartmouth by Cherubini Metal Works.

Aquamarine raises £10m in first round funding

Aquamarine Power, the wave energy developer, announced that it had closed the first round of its fundraising on Monday (21st September) after successfully raising £10 million from investors based in the UK and Ireland. According to the company the proceeds of the fundraising will be used to fund the testing programme and for general working capital purposes.

Commenting on the announcement Martin McAdam, Chief Executive Officer of Aquamarine Power said; “Raising substantial funds in these exceptionally difficult market conditions is an incredible achievement for Aquamarine.
